Wooooah, we’re halfway there,
Wooo-ooah! (Lemon on a pe-ear!)
*ahem* We’re at the halfway point for Small Web September already!
If you’re wondering where the heck last two weeks went, you’re not alone – but don’t despair. There’s still loads of time for small webbing!
This is our ‘How’s it going?’ halfway point check-in, where you can share your SWS progress if you’d like to and compare notes with your goals at the beginning of the challenge. Has anything unexpected come up as you’ve worked on your small web project(s)? Are you focusing on the things you thought you would, or have you found some new side quests to go on?
Here are a couple of question prompts you can use for this check-in:
• What have you been working on so far for SWS?
• Are you focused on the same things you outlined in your goals, or have you found yourself doing something different?
• What are you looking to work on next?
As a reminder, this is the third of five ‘check-in’/comment points that will be published during the event – you can check out the schedule and dates for these posts in the event intro post. There’s no cut-off point for leaving comments on these, so you can add something at any time – you also don’t need to comment on every one or do them in order! The themes are a loose guide, but all discussion is welcome.

Date: 2024-09-14 10:36 pm (UTC)I've done nothing on the latter, but I have actually made some very small progress on the archive, I have almost finished designing the css template for the fanfic pages and have started on the index page's css. Its getting there. Slowly. But progress is progress, right?

Date: 2024-09-14 11:05 pm (UTC)• What have you been working on so far for SWS?
I made a exchange letter page LOL. One for myself, and a blank template if anyone else wants to use it.
By making the page, I kinda figured out how to make a mobile dropdown menu, using the checkbox hack. But then I realized the checkbox hack doesn't allow you to click out of the menu, which is very annoying on mobile. So I just copied some code from w3schools for a javascript dropdown :P
I also switched to VSCodium instead of VScode for writing html/css, so maybe microsoft won't track my movements and all the yaoi i've been typing.
• Are you focused on the same things you outlined in your goals, or have you found yourself doing something different?
I am totally procrastinating on updating Fujofans. I'm making smaller pages right now cuz it's easier to focus on making small new things. Woops!
• What are you looking to work on next?
I've been typing out my ship-specific exchange letters in markdown [example with he-man and skeletor lol], and actually that might do as its own page to send people to! But I could also make individual pages for each ship... hmm.... that way i can also add images if someone needs to look at the characters and interactions for inspo.
Still want to clean up my writing page. The display is a bit thick for my liking, sort of just want them in a list. Though I do like the summary view and to see if it's gen, no fandom, or explicit. Gotta figure out how to make it easier on my own eyes! Then to fix the actual fics, really want it to be barebones with no menu so people can focus on the writing, but I still want the ability to change color schemes and possibly fonts? Will maybe make a template for that later :D

Date: 2024-09-14 11:23 pm (UTC)What have you been working on so far for SWS?
I have a changelog on my website now so it's really easy to point to exactly what I've done :)
Are you focused on the same things you outlined in your goals, or have you found yourself doing something different?
My goals were pretty much "work on my website" and I've been doing that!! almost every day sees me making further updates!
What are you looking to work on next?
Currently I'm working on putting together a page listing all the books I've read in the years since I started keeping track in 2009. Formatting these endless lists is a pain but I will get there eventually. and I have a list of other changes/updates I want to make as well. always more to do!
I also need to loop back around to my linkding instance. I think I mentioned at the beginning of SWS that there were some exciting new updates committed so I was looking forward to whenever the next version would be released -- and it got released this week! So now I need to figure out how to successfully update my instance to the newest release. I've done it once before so presumably I can do it again but it does intimidate me a bit lol.

Date: 2024-09-14 11:44 pm (UTC)What have you been working on so far for SWS?
Learning very quickly that I do not have the skill set to scrounge up a webpage from scratch, for one. Right now I’m using a template from sadgrl.online’s layout builder to fiddle about, but I’m not sure if I’m satisfied with it— I’m going to poke around and look at templates and see what I can come up with.
I am also beating my stylesheet with a mallet. I cannot fathom the concept as well as I’d like, and I have spent the better half of a week arguing with the process of making it work, which it still doesn’t. This, of course, is entirely my fault because I know next to nothing about CSS and even though I’m knee-deep in resources, I’m not a particularly fast learner.
It’s been fantastic, and I do mean that genuinely. Frustrating, of course, but fantastic.
Are you focused on the same things you outlined in your goals, or have you found yourself doing something different?
My main goal was to have something vaguely resembling a website at the end of this, which I am steadily chipping away at. I did not expect to go to war with my stylesheet though— I’ve only done inline CSS in the past and was kind of hoping I could brute force my way through a website without rigging up a stylesheet at all.
It would be awful and tedious to do that for each individual page, though, if my stylesheet has taught me anything.
What are you looking to work on next?
I want to figure out the basics of a template and stylesheet, as previously discussed, and then I want to fill out my index page some, make it look like a proper home instead of having globs of lorem ipsum all over the couch cushions.
no subject
Date: 2024-09-15 02:09 pm (UTC)What exactly are you having trouble with? In-line CSS and CSS files follow the same rules/tags 🤔
Stylesheets is pretty much simply giving names to your divs/boxes. Instead of telling how a div has to look directly on the HTML, you write "div class=cool" and then writte down on the stylesheet how ".cool" has to look.

Date: 2024-09-15 12:29 am (UTC)• code my bestie's poetry website ⭕
• update my page to be mobile friendly ✅
• ??? ✅
I wasn't sure exactly what else I would work on this month but it turned out to be a lot! I updated my doll page (and made a profile/story archive, which included character- and world- building creative work), added an icon gallery, reformatted the crafts gallery, and added writing prompts. (I've also added a change log to keep track of all this.)
Also, I know I complained that the template I used looked too "corporate," so I went in and changed the Facebook-y blue to a nice pink for my personal site and even copied the template over with a sea green for my poetry site.
I'm quite pleased with the progress I've made so far on all of this, honestly!

Date: 2024-09-15 04:49 am (UTC)oooh your doll page looks so cool! I'm inspired to change up my characters page to be so clean looking. Thank god for w3's templates :D
The front page of your site is a little funny looking on mobile? Here's a screenshot: https://images.squidge.org/images/2024/09/14/imagee9a2d2fcc24eadee.png
The menu isn't visible, and clicking on Pine Island doesn't seem to do anything? 🤔 There's also some text in the resources section that overflows onto the right side for me.
Overall I like the clean look you have! I also have the fear of my stuff looking too "corporate" but having the splashes of colors really helps.

Date: 2024-09-15 01:55 am (UTC)I finished 4 shoujo manga reviews and my Silver Millennium Fanon page. I'm also mostly finished with the second volume of my sailor moon chapter reviews. (Note: my site is 18+ for discussions of sex and some swearing.)
Are you focused on the same things you outlined in your goals, or have you found yourself doing something different?
I started out focused on my goals before falling off a bit. I decided to change the layout on the sailor moon chapter reviews and I redid the layout on another site I'm working on. That's done now though so I'm hoping I'll be able to finish my chapter reviews in the next couple of days.
What are you looking to work on next?
Finish the chapter reviews but I'm not sure after that. I may do some more shoujo manga reviews or I may work on a links page for either of my sites.

Date: 2024-09-15 03:34 am (UTC)Are you focused on the same things you outlined in your goals, or have you found yourself doing something different? I ended up getting really, REALLY focused on the resources over everything else.
What are you looking to work on next? I'd /like/ to start actually writing the more fun subjective bits, but I know damn well I'm going to get caught up in finishing moving my story resources master list from google sheets onto this site. (I'm a quarter of the way done, judging by line counts in the spreadsheet...)
Originally I had wanted to find some kind of converter to make moving that over easier on myself, but I quickly realized that the format I wanted was too different, since 1. I started it before I started reading the story, and 2. I'm no longer constrained by the confines of google sheets!! I can put multiple links in one table cell!! I can put images in a table cell and have it not look awful!!
I've actually got a pretty extensive to-do list at this point, but I'm just taking it one at a time as I feel like it. (And a lot of the list items are just me finishing something halfway and then breaking down whats left of it, heh.)

Date: 2024-09-15 04:45 am (UTC)What have you been working on so far for SWS?
As mentioned last time, I published a documentation site for (R·D·F) terms which I am liable to use, in the interest of my actually using them. I was hoping to spend this week developing a means of “profiling” the vocabulary into useful chunks, but instead I got side·tracked working on documentation for Semantically‐Interlinked Online Communities (S·I·O·C) (which is kinda big and I accordingly haven’t finished yet). I’ve also been trying to take it a bit easier this week so I haven’t been working as hard.
Are you focused on the same things you outlined in your goals, or have you found yourself doing something different?
I’m mostly focused on the same things I outlined in my goals, but I may spend more time here and less time there, so to speak. Getting this technical infrastructure and documentation to a good place is very important to me, probably more·so than any single application there·of down the road.
What are you looking to work on next?
I just updated my build system to more easily support the multistage approach I’ve been using on this site, which means I now probably need to update the site to leverage that approach over its existing one. There are also a small number of bugs in both places that I need to spend some time to fix. The big thing I’m wanting to work on, tho, is support for developing vocabulary profiles.

I'm really excited to finally be working on the fanshrine I've been meaning to do for about a year now. My vision turned out to be a lot easier to make reality than I feared. I'm still working on making content for it, but I'm excited to share it in the future. I've been devoting almost all of my freetime to this :^p
Are you focused on the same things you outlined in your goals, or have you found yourself doing something different?
My original goal was just to finish my new book log, but since I finished all the entries last week I've been working a few different things. I started the fanshrine of course. But I also recently realized that while my desktop screen is at 100% scale my laptop is at 125% scale, so some of the precision work on my website is off.... I completely forgot this was a thing and have been tweaking some things so that it's not egregious. Oh, I also told myself I was not going to reformat my character pages into CSS Grid, but I ended up doing that too, lol. I want to redo the game recs page with grids now too.
So my new goals are: finish manifesto, fix responsiveness where I can, redo game recs.
What are you looking to work on next?
After these goals, & hopefully as a grand finale to SWS, it will be finally pushing everything onto neocities. I'm not uploading as I go because I messed with a lot of paths and style sheets. Once it's up I'll have to go around and look for broken links and images too, c'est la vie.

Date: 2024-09-15 06:42 am (UTC)I'm looking forward to finishing the archiving for this specific fandom, and after that making my home page a bit more presentable! (And hopefully I'll have time for my optional goals as well!)

Date: 2024-09-15 07:34 am (UTC)I was doing a fanfic archive but I kinda finished that in week one lmao. The light mode was my bonus goal and that's that finally added (though I may fiddle with it some more but it may involve fiddling more site wide)
I'm going to see if I can make a page of just tags and have the list auto-update as tags are added. That feels like smth astro SHOULD be able to do but guess I can report back next week. I did find a tutorial for adding a search which I don't think is going to work for what I want it to do but I'm gonna give it a try regardless.

Date: 2024-09-15 11:41 am (UTC)What I'm doing:
- archiving original fic and fanfic from the last 20+ years
-- priorities are the original fic that's on an old site
--- because I've lost contact with the host (friend, hopefully okay and just busy)
-- and fic off my hard drive that isn't anywhere else or on random communities
--- because I'd like it to be easier to find
Once original fic from old site + stuff on hard drive is all on both Neocities and my DW fic comm, I'll start on what's on AO3. Without ranting, I can at least say that I expect AO3 to be there next year and I can worry about those words later.
I recognize that I could be doing more sorting and organizing now, but I suspect it'll be easier once everything is in one place and I can look at it all before deciding how I want to list things.

Date: 2024-09-15 11:59 am (UTC)I barely got anything yet, but I'm glad I started and I'm more motivated now ^^
While looking for inspo/other websites I noticed TFL is still updated and new fanlistings get made even today, so that was a nice surprise, I even saw a few for obscure-ish games/characters.
I think when I give my main page a makeover I will try for a bit to get my own domain/hosting, been wanting to do it for awhile and now I want to make my own fanslistings and webrings haha...

Are you focused on the same things you outlined in your goals, or have you found yourself doing something different?
I still want to reduce the file counts dramatically but I spent time this week looking at CSS GRID to see if that could be used to resolve some issues with making the site more mobile friendly. I need to set up a mini-project for myself to have go without actually affecting the current websites.
What are you looking to work on next?
I need to check out some of the Coppermine plug-ins to see which will help with making that software mobile friendly.

Date: 2024-09-15 03:33 pm (UTC)What have you been working on so far for SWS?
Finishing up and uploading my late summer update/folder rehaul to neocities, which I did! It’s got a few errors in terms of case sensitivity though, so I’ll be working on fixing that when I can. My break is over so it’s probably not gonna be anytime soon though.
Here’s the link: https://beetmint.neocities.org/
Are you focused on the same things you outlined in your goals, or have you found yourself doing something different?
I’ve pretty much been sticking to my plan of “finding nice templates so I can put down text and images” but I still find myself struggling when I end up breaking the text due to my lack of skills, most of it’s kinda just like glued together and a lot of duct tape. Hopes and dreams. I’m considering maybe finding a different fic template than the one I currently have since it’s basically permanently set to dark mode.
What are you looking to work on next?
I’m thinking that I’m probably not going to finish up like, hunting down every single fic and outline/idea thing from years within the span of the month and finish up all of them so I’m gonna make that like a long term winter project. I kinda got way more into just making ideas than actual fics but that’s kind of my writing nature, great at having ideas but not so much at actually executing them in a timely manner or readable way. As for other ideas, maybe I’ll make a music album page or something? Haven’t really considered what’s next for the site outside of the fanfic stuff.
In between my site update however a social media site I used to frequent and post on a lot announced it was shutting down in October, so I’m working on essentially recreating the pages for my neocities page as a sort of tribute. I really wish it wasn’t going.

Date: 2024-09-15 05:39 pm (UTC)I've actually completed most of what I set out to do!! This week I updated the CSS for my fashion site. Unfortunately, it's the first site I ever made, so the css is an absolute mess. I've fixed what I consider fixable for the main pages that I update often, but I've decided not to update the semantics for this site.
I also made a lace border img that can be used instead of the multiple outdated divs borders that I've been using for this site; however, it's going to take forever to actually update it on my site. So I've decided just to leave it as is and have made the border img and css available on my links page instead.
• Are you focused on the same things you outlined in your goals, or have you found yourself doing something different?
Same things - see above. and I've added things to the list. I think I was more hopeful about what I could do with my fashion site css to fix it than what I'm planning now though
• What are you looking to work on next?
My last goal for my fashion site is to update the image on the splash page so it loads correctly. I also want to update the semantics on my bookbinding site.

Date: 2024-09-15 08:52 pm (UTC)What have you been working on so far for SWS?
Updating various parts of my personal site, CASTRUM LACUS LITORE! Mostly focused on my Sartauvoir shrine which I'm super happy with, but now the rest of the work for that is a lot of collecting links and writing things up.
I've also done some work on adding sidebars to each page and alphabetising them, adding a credits page and few other bits and bats.
Are you focused on the same things you outlined in your goals, or have you found yourself doing something different?
My main focus was supposed to be working on a stylesheet for my fic pages, but I got totally eaten by Sart Shrine lol. I still want to do that, but I'm not sure I'll get to it. I'm not too fussed though, because I've made good progress.
What are you looking to work on next?
I want to add a splash page for my OCs and then decide on a page layout for them, and make a start on a page for Neroe, my ffxiv WoL! I want to add all the art I have for her at the very least. I also want to investigate the viability of putting a little music player on my Sart shrine, because the idea of having his fight theme (Thunderer) playing on the page makes me giddy. Prayer circle I don't get DMCAed by Square Enix LOL.

Date: 2024-09-15 09:09 pm (UTC)I was working on a landing page and a page to detail things about a silly AU I made, both of which I finished, but now that I'm finished with them I keep tinkering with their styles!
I've found myself doing something different in the sense that now I'm working on a small fanfiction archive for the AU itself, so...extra goal for me? xD
Next, I'm looking to work on another little fanshrine and maybe a fanfiction archive for all the other fics I've written, which'll be interesting because I'm considering doing a thing with iframes instead of just laying out all the massive chapters on one page. ^^;

Date: 2024-09-16 11:32 am (UTC)I have been focusing on working with the code on my homepage, fixing small problems and learning about CSS. I had to ditch the WYSIWYG editor because it kept adding code that didn't make sense, so I've gone back in with BBEdit and changed what was superfluous or confusing and made additional edits by hand. I want the homepage to be in good shape before I make any other pages.
• Are you focused on the same things you outlined in your goals, or have you found yourself doing something different?
I have mostly focused on the code, but I also spent an afternoon writing out the text for my dolls' main page.
• What are you looking to work on next?
I'm going to have to decide what I want to do with my top right menu. It needs some kind of design, because I think it's too plain, but I don't want it to be too fussy because I want to keep it in balance with the layout graphics.

Date: 2024-09-16 12:11 pm (UTC)I'm also angsting quite a bit over the fact that apparently no listing for personal fic archives exists (or at least is known enough that I can find it) and that the fandom rule of "be the change you want to see in the world" is hanging above my head. I really, *really* don't want to be the one to do this T_T But my brain refuses to just drop the topic and I hate it thanks brain.

Date: 2024-09-17 01:31 am (UTC)I've mainly worked on my events page since I've been meaning to update it for some time. I've also been crossposting fics on there too.

For the most part I've ended up focusing on what I first outlined in my goals! I ended up doing some things I didn't expect, such as crossposting a piece of meta I recently made, and updating my tokusatsu watchlist.
What are you looking to work on next?
I hope I can start working on the 2024 section of my events page, but my spoons have been limited for the past few days so I'll just see what I can do for my site in general.

So, for the rest of SWS, I want to:
/nopepage/yeppage, and the other two will become a "resources" section. That sounds doable!

Date: 2024-09-22 11:02 am (UTC)Last weekend I found the time to work on one of my main goals for the challenge, which was to improve my fic page (and also meta page, since I realised the same principles apply) styling. I created a dedicated fic page stylesheet with bigger margins for readability, and then I played around with some other aspects, like a slightly less bright white background and a slightly less stark black font colour to make it easier on the eyes. I used the WebAIM contrast checker to make sure that the new combination was still accessible.
I also looked at fic pages whose readability I like and figured out what they do that I wasn't doing, like bigger paragraph and line spacing, and then I added that. I toyed with making my headers a different font instead of Verdana, but then settled on a slightly closer letter spacing instead. (I love that all of that type of customisation is possible ^^) It's still a work in progress, so I can always improve on it later, but I like it much better now. You can see what the pages used to look like from this Wayback Machine capture of my first fanfic, versus the live version.
I applied the new stylesheet to all of my fic pages and then realised I should also add it to my pages for longer meta essays. In the process, I also realised that my imagery for my Harvard/Aiden meta essay was not mobile friendly at all, so I spent some time making it responsive for small screens, setting up a max width and adding a link to the image to view it in full (mainly beneficial for desktop, since on mobile the image is displaying as large as it can for the screen anyway). At the moment these don't open as overlays, so it's a separate page that you have to navigate back from - later I'll try and figure out how to do the overlay thing. I've found coding image stuff to be a bit of a pain because searching it turns up a billion and one WordPress plugins rather than what I actually want to do >.> (Also, figuring out the right vocabulary can be a challenge).
