In honour of spoooooky season 🎃👻🦇, I thought it could be fun to share any spooky small web resources we've come across on our travels - or made! Like great spooky themes, icons, blinkies, fonts... or anything!

I'll start by sharing these really cute bat dividers by steddiecameraroll-graphics on Tumblr! There's a purple gradient set and a rainbow set!

Ooh - it looks like they also have a whole set of Halloween-themed dividers with pumpkins, witches, candy corn, and even more bats! Super cute :D

Has anyone else found or made some fun Halloween-themed designs?

These are really cute dividers! I love tiny resources like these, they make a huge difference in even just a dreamwidth post :D I had to wait til I was home to see the links, they're log-in only on tumblr, but it was well worth the wait.

I made a toggleable Halloween theme for my personal site a year ago: image.png

The gooey orange image is a repeating PNG on a plain background!

The code looks like this:

body {
  background-image: url("/images/halloween/goo.png");
  background: var(--darkgray);

  background-size: auto;
  background-attachment: fixed;
  background-repeat: repeat-x;
}

I feel like I could do something else like spiderwebs or pumpkins :P Clean it up a little, use some different fonts... maybe for another year.

And for the vine graphics on the main part of the page, those are pixels that I asked my spouse to make for me!

The official mozilla border generator was very helpful to get the css to make the border. I think a lot of those dividers you linked in the original post would work great as borders too!

Another cool resource is that google fonts now has filtering for seasonal styles! I believe all the fonts on google fonts are open source or free to use in some way. And you can always download them so you don't have to rely on google's ecosystem for your site :D

Some fonts I like: - Creepster, it's so silly! - Darumadrop One, very cute and chunky, the preview shows Japanese letters but it works for latin characters too. - Eckmannpsych from oh no type. Funky. It's paid on their site, but they also have demo fonts for student/social media use if you attribute them. - Blocus, used to be on velvetyne type foundry, free and open source font makers, but since retired. I like it for a cleaner, easier to read gothic font!

There's a lot of cool fonts that people make expressly to share with others! Open source stuff is one of the cooler things about small web! - fontshare - usemodify - indestructible type - velvetyne type foundry - dribbbble

And I've been looking through Fonts In Use to see what are some well-known fonts that people use! I don't know anything about design or fonts, so it's interesting to see what effects the different types have... especially when you read the comments and designers get very opinionated about fonts you thought all looked the same!

Thanks for all these resources! Blocus is exactly the type of gothic-style font I was looking for - so elegant but also looks super clean! And your Halloween theme looks great too!

oooh I love the purple bat dividers! thanks for sharing them. :D

I think the Halloween Greetings font is cool. it's made out of the lettering on 1920s Halloween cards.

Rosemary's Halloween shrine is adorable and has a bunch of things like backgrounds, pixels, blinkies, and then some! I really like the planchette cursors.

Appledust has some cute spooky pixels and backgrounds in the You section. I especially love the boba tea with eyeballs and the pastel skulls.

here's 32-Bit Café's Halloween 2024 event! you can click around everyone's submissions and websites for their Halloween shrines and goodies. :) there's also a bunch of pixels to adopt and stuff from their Halloween 2023 event.

Oh, sweet, I’ve got a list!

1. Wynn’s Wonderful Pixel Paradise has lovely tiling backgrounds themed after Halloween and bats.

2. While not strictly a spooky resource, the sprite archive at Pokémon Database does have plenty of ghost types, so if spooky Pokémon are your thing, it’s good for finding page decor.

3. I’ve got a whole handful of silly, spooky fonts: Spooky Creeky by javanicestudio on FontSpace, Frightening by Lettersweet on FontSpace, Giant Spider and Little Ghost by Andi Moz on DaFont, Retro Arcade Terror by Woodcutter on DaFont, Headus, Blackcraft and Grimoire Of Death by GGBot on Itch, and Pixel Enochian by sarabarkat on Itch.

4. If you’re into custom cursors, Cosmica Devil by toumeya on Itch is a fun one! The whole Cosmica series is fun, to be honest, but Devil is spooky, so it’s the one that’s most on-topic.

5. A cute skeleton pagedoll, Halloween stamp, and some bony dividers by Gasara on DeviantArt.

Happy Hallows!

aw man, i'm seeing this so late! i dumped a big bunch of halloween graphics on my website for the 32-bit cafe event!

the wayback machine is a fun way to find stuff - there were TONS of halloween/spooky-themed webrings back in the day, it turns out! this is one page i bookmarked because it has so many halloween webrings. i did a bunch of surfing around old halloween-themed sites in october.
