smallweb!
This is an open post to talk about what you're working on, what you'd like to show off, cool resources, things that maybe aren't working so well, etc.
Also please check out previous posts to see what people are up to or if you might be able to help someone out.

Date: 2025-08-23 01:46 pm (UTC)I also added a changelog for the site, so folks can tell what's been updated. The site's still a work in progress as I replay FFXI for story and work on my FFXIV fanscript (I haven't touched that in over a year; time to work on that again!)
Anyway, really having fun with the site. I hope it is of use to people!

Date: 2025-08-23 02:09 pm (UTC)Right now, I'm focusing on A) finishing my fanlisting in the next three weeks and B) building a website for my partner

Date: 2025-08-23 03:18 pm (UTC)I started outlining the site architecture/simple roadmap for my OTP fan shrine site I'm building! Now to do the building of it... But I've had some health stuff going on the last few weeks so I'm trying not to feel too impatient with myself. Trying being the operative word.
I also started organizing for the first session of what I hope will be a semi-regular IRL HTML meetup! Which I will probably be mostly using to work on said fansite, lol.
Oh, also started going through the Odin Project curriculum. I want to get a better foundation of coding skills rather than keep patchworking things together.

Date: 2025-08-24 10:59 pm (UTC)I guess my goal with the tracker stuff is to write more code now so I can write less of it later … that is, if I automate as much of the process as possible, all I'll need to do is run a very quick function to log whatever media I'm tracking and then the build scripts take care of the rest. Paradoxically, tracking this stuff on my website feels like a way of minimising the amount of time I need to spend at the computer dealing with the data I've put in, because the site deals with it for me in the format that suits me best (while third-party sites wouldn't). I need to see if I can figure out a way to get authors and titles of books logged as "acquired" into a list for completing-read, so Emacs can have a go at autofilling those details when I'm logging reading progress; if I can manage that, it'll seem like an even less intrusive process.

Date: 2025-08-25 08:57 am (UTC)Since most of my web projects fizzle out I've been trying to work on something with a smaller scope, so I decided to make a one-page web shrine to my favourite Pokémon TCG artist. I wanted to include a table with info on all the cards they illustrated, and since they're still making illustrations for new sets I decided to store the data in an array and then generate a table from that instead of coding it all manually.
The thing is, for some reason I decided to do it in PHP even though I'm more experienced (and it probably would have been easier) in JavaScript. I keep getting blocked over things like the data structure not being fit for purpose or not being able to autoload classes because I didn't set up the file structure right. For a one-page project it feels too cumbersome so I'm going to re-write it in JavaScript and see if I can simplify it!
I'd like to learn how to use PHP someday, but I think it'd be better on a bigger project.

Date: 2025-08-25 10:57 pm (UTC)It's funny that considering I spend most of my time writing fic, I tend to work on anything but adding fic when I actually come to do things with my site. I think it's because other areas feel more manageable, whereas my unarchived library of fic is vast and intimidating. I'm going to think of some ways to break it up or just make it more appealing for me to archive for Small Web September...

Date: 2025-08-26 02:30 am (UTC)Ohhhh, I like the layout you've got! Feels like not enough sites use full-width layouts or make them work well.
I so feel you on the unarchived library of fic. <.< I have over a dozen oneshots I haven't uploaded to AO3 yet and at this point I don't even know if I want to bother with waiting to backdate them, might just let them start collect dust right away, the writing is so oooold and not as good in places.

Date: 2025-08-26 08:58 pm (UTC)Heh, I haven't put these on AO3 either and I've decided I probably won't - it was only when I lit on the idea of starting my own fanworks archive that I started to come around to the idea of archiving my oldest, cringiest stuff (after flirting with the idea of putting it on SquidgeWorld). For some reason, situating it in a Personal Archive of Me feels fine, and I think also because there's a little bit of friction associated with accessing the site, it doesn't feel like I'm putting my old stuff under a spotlight xD
But the drawback is that I'm trying to add that and my newer works to the site, which over time comes to more than 100 fics, and I keep making more 😅🙈

Date: 2025-08-27 10:54 am (UTC)I can understand that. :0 Maybe I'll do the same TBH, we'll see. I've already shared my oldest fannish writing that isn't extremely personal and private, so I feel like the cat's already out of the bag haha, but it's an interesting idea!

Date: 2025-08-26 02:29 am (UTC)Coming slightly late but I finally took a break from Other Obligations to deal with the SSL issues I was having. Turns out my NGINX configuration was blocking Let's Encrypt from accessing the page it needed to perform the HTTP-01 challenge for one of my subdomains, lmaoo. Fixed now! Although I've also discovered an issue with what appears to be the combination of the acme-companion and Watchtower Docker containers that I've (fingers crossed) fixed now I think. Now I can actually link to my site without nasty warnings every time the SSL certificate expires! X'D
