Heya, [community profile] smallweb!

This is an open post to talk about what you're working on, what you'd like to show off, cool resources, things that maybe aren't working so well, etc.

Also please check out previous posts to see what people are up to or if you might be able to help someone out.

Worked on a lot of stuff this month, although most of it is still not ready to be Witnessed lol. But!

  • I successfully switched hosts! Now my index page is hosted at my main domain and my fansite is on my subdomain. I also made a page on my old Neocities to let people know the fansite had moved.

  • I'm almost done making my fanlisting collective!! No link because it's not quite ready yet so I don't want people to look at it while it's still a WIP... I have the full layout done and most of the pages already planned. I put my OTP fanlisting on hold right now but I'm hoping to be able to apply at TFL soon so I can finish it this month, hopefully!

  • Relatedly, I'm working on a little clique where you adopt pixel art of the Pokémon starters. It's also almost done; I took a break last night because I'd worked on it all day and I wanted to sleep on it. I managed to make it so you can switch from the regular pixel sprites to the shiny pixel sprites and I'm pretty happy with it haha.

  • I've also been slowly hacking away at my personal site... My conflicting desires to have compact websites and good readability are always clashing LOL but I might end up just making separate layouts for my fic and art. I was thinking of using Kaylee Rowena's gallery template, because I (predictably) love how compact it ends up looking. I have so much art though... Just thinking about hosting it all feels so daunting.

  • I wrote a little post on DW about planning web layouts! Nothing fancy or really that impressive, but I like talking about my process...

I also thought I'd drop a link to the links roundup my friend [personal profile] marinehaddock compiled after his Citrus Con panel in June! It has a lot of resources for webmaking.

(I need a webdev DW icon, clearly...)

I've been getting back to my comic and story as I write it out before I draw it in comic form. It seems I take some breaks and that's been helping from burnout.
Also I'm going to work on sorting new postal stamps I've recently gotten from friends. That's a hobby that always gives me comfort.
And lastly I've been enjoying playing Animal crossing New horizons more. A few months back I created a new island and it's been a fun process starting fresh again.

I've done a lot of work fleshing out and organizing the content that will be hosted on my Quartz site, but it's not exposed to the web yet. It's a WIP project where I'm figuring out the balance of a functional and organized yet not over-engineered Obsidian vault/personal wiki/digital garden. It feels like a very worthwhile use of time, though, and I'm already finding myself using the reformatted and improved notes as a reference point.

I do find it a bit funny how different the content of my Quartz site is from the vast majority of example "digital gardens" you see going around. The content I'm used to seeing is, unsurprisingly, mostly about programming or PKM or STEM coursework. Applying the same principles to my notes about, idk, kink feels like I'm doing something scandalous.

Oh, and I made a quick and dirty Neocities page for the local HTML freewrites meetup group I'm hoping to coordinate.

No real progress from me this month (I've been dealing with health issues) but I do have a question: anyone know any good lightweight blogging scripts? Ideally PHP; I'm not looking for a static site generator since I'd like to be able to update it from mobile. Crucially I'd also like to be able to backdate posts, as I have a bunch of writing I'm hoping to archive...

I just finished a massive page designed to help me look through and organize the cut content, roughs, and drafts of my fanfiction. I had found a trick to implement CSS-only hover text, and I spent an inordinate amount of time working my authors notes into that. data-title is such a cool and insane element to have.

If you're interested, I'm basically using method #2 from this article:

https://dev.to/koustav/3-ways-to-display-content-on-hovering-over-an-element-using-only-css-3d4m

but with the #id replaced with span[id^="myid"] which lets me style every unique id with one block of code, just so long as I make sure to include "myid" at the start of its name.

Adding white-space: pre-line;

and

word-wrap: break-word;

lets me input line and paragraph breaks using the symbol, since data-title text doesn't allow for the usual html tags.

I think my next project is going to be adding some content I have floating around in my personal notes, but not uploaded. After that, I sort of flip-flop between creating new webpages, and adding content to what I've already uploaded, but failed to flesh out.

I installed Yunohost with the help of an amazing person. I have to wait to get a static IP from Metronet, but when I do, I'm gonna move all my sites to be self-hosted on my own personal server. I'm also going to set up a personal Fediverse server! I'm using mastohost rn, but I want something where I'm not restricted by the host provider's TOS. I also plan on messing around with SSGs a bit.

It's kinda killing me not being able to set it up now tbh. I'm so excited to start my self-hosting journey! I'm thinking of setting up various femslash-themed fandom communities.

I prettied up my personal website like I said I was going to do. I feel like it looks like “just learned CSS” but I think it looks nice, at least. Added a lot more pages as well.

Right now I’m working on making all the links more accessible (adding titles, making the hyperlink text clearer, removing target=_ ...).

I haven't been doing much because the world has been falling apart but seeing this post has reminded me to add more links to the linklist, which has been done, and I've especially added to the Articles I'm Reading page. Soon I will reach my goal to organize the sum of human knowledge there because Google can't be arsed to do it anymore, I'm sure.

I decided to stop using Notion for anything so I needed to write down my recipes elsewhere. I still wanted to be able to look at them on my phone when I'm in the kitchen, so I spent an afternoon typing and whipping up this Recipes page. It was really fun because I learned how to use filters (though my javascript has become messy in my haste to get this up/working quickly).

o/ Are we up for the return of Small Web September next month? Last year it seemed that people were keen for it to become a regular thing, so I'm hoping yes? :D

I haven't had a lot of opportunity to plan so far because August snuck up on me and then Covid snuck up on me (definitely didn't see that one coming >.>) but I thought that the format last time worked pretty well, in terms of the check-in frequency/amount (weekly check-ins for a total of five) and subject (topic requests/suggestions are also welcomed!)

Made a proper scrolling box for all the webrings and cliques on my index page instead of it all being in a iframe. Been meaning to make this change for some time, just lack of spoons. The summer head has been making it hard to do any bigger updates other than "add new drawing", "crosspost this fic" or "update these links". I've been itching to redo my entire layout but also the amount of spoons that will require is also massive...

In the meantime I made another backup of my site cause it's been a while. And I plan to organize some files in a different copy of the backup since there's folders and files in there I don't need anymore. The neocities file editor is not fun to work with so that's why I'm doing it this way. Though I'll have to figure out how to update everything later... I'll worry about that a different time.
