Totally fell off the Snowflake Challenge halfway through, but I'll be trying to participate in this month's 'Stuff I Love' challenge by [personal profile] dreamersdare :)

This week's theme/prompt is standalone media. I tried to think about it for a bit, but I realized that a lot of the things I like are inevitably sequels, or were created for the intention of turning into a sequel. Honestly, the definition of 'standalone' is a bit confusing to me. Is something that's adapted from a different medium a standalone, even if it has no sequel? Or does that not count?

Here, you'll find 8 movies, and 2 animes. In some cases, I have stretched the definition of 'standalone' to something that's more convenient for me. The challenge said this isn't meant to be a rec list, but rather for me to squee. I tried my best, but the idea of this being seen by others + the fact that I don't have the proper vocabulary to actually express what I specifically liked in something means that this will still subconsciously pan out like a rec list.

Without further ado, in no particular order:

old indeed cause i think the last time i genuinely played was like 2015-2016 ... i have my parents there, my irl friends, a shitload of OCs, mako and haru from free! for some reason, and ... i decided to add sylvie, zhongli, and two of my newer ocs to celebrate getting back into it LMFAO

i also found out there's a puzzle and dragons spinoff for the 3ds and that's sick as hell. ive been playing the mobile game on and off for years now so it's nice to have a game for it that isn't 'pray to god you don't get shit pulls and need to have premium currency to rerun a dungeon where the boss insta-nukes you because you don't have a good enough team'

Shadows of furniture and open doorways seem to hide dark figures leftover from the horror movie marathon they had been having until- Kyoko cranes her head to see the green numbers of the oven clock in the kitchen- a little after two in the morning. She settles back against the pillow, closes her eyes, and breathes out slowly, and Hana snores a bit louder on the other couch.

It takes a moment for Kyoko’s heart to stop pounding from the sudden noise. The fear slowly fades away from where it was lurking in the back of her mind like a leopard in a tree. She shifts into a more comfortable position on the couch and stretches out her legs, knees aching from being in a cramped position for too long.

Right now I'm kinda going back and forth on whether I should have a seperate community for tcg, as I'm kind of thinking of joining more of them. Having it flood my main account does not go in my favour since it's fandom oriented, but making another acc just for that is a hassle with logging in and out. The best case scenario would be this.

This also makes me think of having all the tcgs hosted somewhere else other than my site, and by that I mean a site only for tcgs. I cannot get a domain on my own like a lot of people in the space can do, so free option seems to be the best for me. Since having to log in and out of neocities is a hassle and for personal reasons i will not use nekoweb, I'm not sure what my other options are. There seem to be free hosting for a lot of tcgs but I just can't seem to find a way to get to them since a lot require an invite of some sort. Oh well. I guess I'll have to keep searching for more until I find something.

Challenge #8

Talk about your creative process.

You know, I don't think I've ever sat down and thought through my creative process before. This should be fun.

My solo-written fic, as opposed to my cowrites (/waves to [personal profile] rhi , [personal profile] ilyena_sylph , [personal profile] t_vo0810 and others/) is one of two kinds, usually: either it's written for an exchange fic, or a bunny ups and grabs me.

When I sign up for exchanges, I try and craft my sign-up to get specific recipients, although I try and make sure that I can write for all potential recipicients. (I've only hit 'oh God no DEFAULT' levels of DNW a couple of times, which considering my Cursed Exchange Luck, I'm pretty proud of.) Once I get my assignment, I sit with the prompt that calls to me the most, and see what kind of story I can create that fits both the wordcount requirement and what the recip wants. Depending on how much plot there is, I throw myself on rhi's mercy for help, lol.

Once I've figured out what the story is, then I write it. Very rarely, I finish my first draft before deadline; usually I'm butting right up to it. (Being several hours ahead is a wonderful thing, sometimes. It feels like a sneaky little extension, lol.) I use the period between submission deadline and reveals to edit and polish my fic, although (thankfully) I write very clean drafts so there's rarely all that much editing, SPAG aside, to do. Sometimes my brain is a hunk of mouldy cheese and poor [personal profile] rhi has to talk me down and remind me that I am a good writer and my fic will look better once I have had a snack and a nap.

When it comes to non-exchange fic, it usually starts with a bunny nibbling on me. Once the nibbling becomes too hard to ignore, I sit down and write - sometimes just scenes, sometimes snippets, sometimes whole-ass fic. Then I let the for-publishing stuff sit for a few days before going back over it, then getting it beta'd.

Regardless of whether it's exchange fic or for my own satisfaction, there's one step of the process I find utterly loathsome: titles. There's a reason most of my fics have either lyrics or quotes for titles - titling is the worst, even harder than summaries. I am in awe of people who find it easy. But works need titles, alas, and so far I've somehow managed, lol.

And that's my creative process! Feel free to ask me any questions you may have.

You may be aware of Punxsutawney Phil, but did you know Illinois has Woodstock Willie? Groundhog Day was filmed in Woodstock, Illinois so they've got their own festival. I haven't been to the festival but I've been to Woodstock a few times and there murals and statues dedicated to the movie around the downtown. Woodstock Willie says spring is coming, so I'm going with his prediction.

Even though the windchill yesterday and today is below freezing it's above 0 so it feels honestly balmy! Yesterday we did a grocery run and we had to leave our coats in the car. We made supplies to make chicken gnocchi soup, which is one of my favorites. We couldn't find mini gnocchis so my husband just cut the regular sized ones in half before adding them to the pot. I was worried it would damage their structural integrity but they held up just fine.

I haven't reported much on my hobbies lately. I've been mostly doing some little fussy maintenance things. For example, I have some books with extra-sticky stickers on them that needed removing so I spent some time last week carefully removing what I could. Acetone is my preferred method for shiny/laminated covers. I generally leave those stickers on papery covers. I hear a blow dryer is good way to ease those off but I don't own a blow dryer so I haven't tried it yet :P

Plateaued on the diet, mainly because I gave blood on Thursday and just ate everything in the house that evening because I felt wobbly and in need of food. I imagine that not being able to go out cycling because of rain/because I was banned from heavy exercise by the blood transfusion service also contributed.

Cycling is not looking good this week either as it continues to rain. I'll have to do the exercises attached to the diet instead, and at least I can pick the weightlifting back up, although it doesn't help that I am going to give evidence in my son's autism assessment on Wednesday - which is normally a weightlifting day. I guess that means this week weightlifting is Tuesday and Friday instead.

Life gets in the way of all our goals, and this is normal. Just have to do my best and hope it is better than nothing.

I have at least replanted the baby apricot tree out of the pot it was in and into the raised bed where it will have a chance to stretch its roots and grow a bit better.

Now to go and get the shopping for the week, come back and clean the kitchen, make lunch (and dinner?), then hopefully there will be time to edit another chapter on the narrowboat novel before it's time to eat the dinner and go to belly dance class.

I realized that now that I have a completed deck in colors, I should probably display it somewhere on a page of it's own. This also made me realize I have to make that page, since the neotcg does not come with it.

Needless to say, I just spent an hour truing to figure out how to do that, giving up on the js file approach as I had no idea how to make it work. Manually adding everything it is. If anything I need to add it only once per deck, and as tedious as the process is going to be in the future, I don't have a better solution for the time being. I spent way too much time inspecting code and trying to make something work to care enough about making it work some other way. Not even done fully, but progress is progress. At least it's functional

I'm trying to extend my paid time for another month but when I try to load the shop on mobile, it just gives me a blank/white page and tries to download a .txt file called "__setdomsess.txt" (image). Cool, totally not sketchy as fuck 😭

I will try it via desktop later but I found the behavior strange & wanted to know if other people are having this issue or if it's just me @_@

Edit (15 hours after originally posting): Seems like it's fixed now! I was able to extend my paid time via desktop :)

In honor of the various Femslash events that popped up this February, I figured I'd go with the theme for the pairings prompts. :D I picked two of my favorites.

Managed to finish my [community profile] smallfandomfest prompt early this morning (only 2 hours late...).

Signed up for the Fresh Femslash Salad Bar, figured I'd try my hand at it. If anyone has a particular femslash pairing they want to see (and you know I ship it or just ask, you never know - I haven't finished updating that list), feel free to request a pairing. I'm not quite sure what pairings I'll do, but that would be helpful to narrow it down.

Week 1 of the DCU Femslash February Comment Fest has started which is focused on drabble/short form, angst, and/or rarepair.

Wrote up a post at [community profile] supergirl_tv about current challenges/events happening, feel free to let me know if I missed any. I'm going to try do that monthly, but who knows.

Also did a "First Kiss" prompt at basically all my communities that I run.

Finished my Hunting Party icons for [community profile] tvmovie20in20 - shockingly early! I of course had to use Nick Wechsler's character Oliver for the "Space" prompt in honor of the first role I knew him from Kyle from Roswell. I used also a lot more textures than I normally do with this set so hopefully they turned out ok. XD Seriously if anyone starts watching the show and enjoys it, please let me know! It's a really small fandom so the more the merrier.

“I will not entertain the notion for even a moment.” He scoffed, crossing his legs, folding his arms. “Counterfeit cards being trafficked on the Tonakailiner. What dross.”

I started writing a new book before I had even shared the last one with you. I had the feeling even before Rei had completed the cover for that first book that I was now unable to let go of this minor character who had appeared in two episodes of a Kamen Rider show in late 2023, and that now whatever I have imagined I had seen in her character had condemned us both to spending an eternity together. Through the early months of 2025, I spent my time imagining this train journey, trying to build not only on who I felt Harima Shiori was, but also who I thought her partner in the Investigations Department, Kugimiya Licht might be. I became obsessed with the idea of these two as a kind of awful Mulder and Scully, and I became fascinated with the idea that, through circumstance and poor execution, the episodes they share and the one summer movie in which Kugimiya appears sets up this scenario where both of these characters who are working together are antagonists on behalf of differing causes. It felt like Hitler and the Devil going out for dinner and neither of them realising the other was a bad guy also; it was stupid, I felt like I had to take it seriously.

Whilst writing the last book, I realised I had gone in a direction that presented the end results of a world in which evil is always the obvious outcome. In writing this one during the cold months of winter and the early spring, I realised I wanted to explore what steps you might need to take to reach that bad ending. In addition, I wanted to be a little defiant, I wanted you to know that I think Harima Shiori is the kind of character you can tell a broader array of stories about than her roughly fifteen minutes over two episodes give her credit for. I may have played my hand with this too early, having already shared two different stories in which I tried to push Kugimiya and Harima into their roles as awful Mulder and Scully, in which I tried to make the Investigations Department mean something more than their role as bad guys for two episodes before the franchise's traditional Christmas and New Year cliffhanger. Along the way, I was greatly inspired by not only Rei, but [personal profile] linky, [personal profile] luckyzukky, and [personal profile] likealighthouse also, all of whom I owe a great debt to that I can never repay. Likewise, Stewart, who is now possibly more experienced with shepherding me than he would like to be, really helped ensure this work made sense before finally being placed in your hands. When writing this, the Black Saturn community humoured me with more kindness and patience than I deserved as I spent a year posting allusions in one thread to every possible base instinct humanity is known to possess. As a companion piece, I also wrote the final story in our Kudo Mina cycle, this last part acting as a sort of epilogue to one specific thread found in this book.

I wanted to both show you that Shiori was more important than the two episodes she appeared in gave her room to prove, and I wanted to try and challenge myself to write a kind of story that was different from anything I had previously made. This book went through numerous titles before we settled on this. The final title is testament to my firm belief that everything you might possibly want to say sounds better when spoken in Spanish.

I wanted to write about the moments before the fall, the moments in which you are so convinced you are doing the right thing that you don't stop to think about what the outcome of those actions might be. I think that's at the heart of Shiori's character, I think that's what makes her so relatable. I want you to see her like I see her; I want you to listen to what she is telling you even though you know you can't trust her. Perhaps, in a way, I'm also asking you to extend this courtesy to me.

How did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge go?

It went quite well! Although I was relatively "late" to a few prompts, I tried to keep the pressure off of myself and have a good time. I still did every prompt, after all. I'm especially proud of the amount of wishes I granted for the wishlist-related challenges!

I made an effort to read other people's posts that were linked in the comments of the challenge announcements, but no particular effort towards commenting. Next year, I think I want to try commenting on other people's posts more!

Challenge #14

In your own space, create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom.

I actually wasn't sure what to do with this one (thus, the delay), but, since I'm getting into Kingdom Hearts, and I'm saving a lot of links related to it, I thought I'd share a very small list of the things I am using, or that I think are neat. So not quite a promo post, not quite a rec list, but something in-between, perhaps? Please pardon the clear Soriku bias.
(Maybe next year, I'll make a reclist with a certain trope as a theme in fanworks, rather than a particular fandom? Assuming this challenge comes up again.)
