I'm guessing it has to do with how they process frames or whatever. Since RSS was invented, web pages have become more complex and the reader has to parse what data is important and what's not, and it's not consistent across different sites.

Also just by the name something called "NetNewsWire" doesn't sound like something that would prioritize images, especially from microblogging sites.
