Small Web September Check-In 5: Wrap-Up!
And now, the end is near... And so I face the final check-in... ๐ถ
It's already time for our very last check-in for Small Web September!
If you can believe it, we're already on the last day of Small Web September. How is everyone doing? Maybe you feel super organised and productive and have hit every single one of your goals - or maybe you feel like there simply hasn't been enough time in the month to do what you wanted to do. (I feel you 100%). Maybe it's somewhere in the middle!
Whatever your status, congrats on getting to this point and for taking part in the challenge! Even if you feel like you didn't hit enough of your goals, setting out to do something new with your small web project(s) is awesome on its own. Taking part in the comments and community around SWS is excellent! (I'm totally unbiased with this one, of course :D) Or maybe you're making plans for what you can accomplish when your schedule lets up a bit.
Here are some questions to use for this check-in:
In a few days, I'll also post a feedback post where people can share how they found the challenge and maybe give some thoughts on the next iteration (which, all being well, I'd love to run again!). Thank you all for taking part and making this a fantastic challenge! I hope you've enjoyed it <3
For our previous check-in around troubleshooting and problem-solving, go here: Small Web September Check-In 4: Troubleshooting

- I'm planning to archive the genuinely terrible unfinished Final Fantasy VIII comic I drew in my teens.
I definitely didn't make much progress on this, but I did at least get started! The first two pages of the comic are now up on the site.
It's a real struggle to find the motivation to work on this; it's so embarrassing, and getting it ready to post requires so much work! But, now that I've made a start, hopefully it'll be easier to carry on.
- I've got assorted Final Fantasy VIII commentfic scraps floating around that I'm not sure what to do with; maybe I'll pull all of those together and think about whether it's worth creating a page for them.
I'll be honest: I completely forgot I was planning to do this. I'd still like to at some point!
- I recently started adding small sections for other Final Fantasy and FF-adjacent games. I've got pages up for Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XVI, so I'll see if I can make progress on adding some more this month.
I did make some progress here! I've added pages for Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy XV, with a separate page for my FFXV fanfiction. (I framed it as Gladio explaining what the fics are, which means the page ultimately omits a lot of information that might be useful - he's not going to specify things like wordcount, after all - but it was pretty fun to write.)
I also ended up making a few additions that weren't in my original goals:
- a directory, in case people are looking for something specific and don't want to engage with the choose-your-own-adventure site navigation style.
- a Garden Square page; it currently just holds my thoughts on popular fan theories, but it could be a fun format for talking about other contentious fandom issues.
- a page about the many times I got lost or stuck while playing Final Fantasy VIII.
This has been a really fun event! Thank you so much for hosting it.

That's such a cool concept! I love it :D
I'm really glad you had fun! <3

- I finished my "other" page! There's no empty page on my craft site anymore \o/
As for where I will go from here... *stares at the mountain of knitting and crochet projects to archive* To the yarn mines I guess ^^"""" And I seriously hope I can get this done before the next edition of this event x'D
Thanks for organizing Small Web September =)

Right now, I'm fiddling with a new layout based on a fic exchange letter template that was shared here by someone whose username I now can't remember. (If it was you, I'm so sorry! I stayed up past my bedtime working on it, is my excuseโฆ) I'm not sure I'll commit and switch over but I like it better than my current layout.

Congrats on getting lots done, and I'm stoked that you've rediscovered your love of code tinkering as well. I hope you have fun doing more later today!

Thankyou for running this event though, its been interesting to see what other people are working on, and I feel like I have learned some stuff, even though I didn't participate as much as I would have liked. Also cool to see a few names/sites here I recognise from exploring the small web. :D

I'm really pleased that you enjoyed the event, and thank you for taking part! <3 Good luck with the next things that you do!

My long-term goal is to transfer my site to a different host with my own domain name once I really establish my site's content. I don't want to make that move until I have a significant amount of content and have worked in a regular routine of building my site everyday.
no subject
That sounds really awesome! I would like to read that book someday, I'm sure it would be really beneficial. It's cool that it prompted you to think not just about physical objects, but about interests as well!
Wishing you luck with building up your content and establishing a site-building routine! I would also like to do that with more regularity...

I did a couple of things, not as much as I'd like, but more importantly, this event was the push I needed to get back to working on my site, bit by bit, so thank you!

I scrabbled through trying to build a site, borked it up immensely, started from scratch, borked it up immensely and started from scratch again, and havenโt been able to touch it in the past week due to Unprecedented Weather Events that luckily havenโt caused personal harm to anything but my internet connection.
So I guess what I worked on can best be described as learning. I worked on learning. I broke things and trawled forums for hours to fix them, I figured out how tabbed pages work from a cool YouTube video, Iโm going to touch up on flexbox as soon as I can because I think itโs the magic bullet to finally make things work how I wantโ I learned a lot, really, and it was a fun experience. This event was the exact push I needed to find a new hobby.
What's next for your small web plans? Where will you go from here?
Iโll make the website for real this time, thatโs what Iโll do! Maybe share some original writing or a shrine to some of my blorbos. And thenโฆ I have plans to learn about how to implement JavaScript for little things, so thatโs going to be fun!
Thank you so much for running this event, I had a great time.
no subject
Ooh! Thanks for that video. I created something like tabs using an iframe, I had no idea you could do it with radio buttons.
That's something I like about site making too, is that I'm always learning something new and experimenting with what can work. It's a fun hobby for sure!

alas! I did not complete my goal for this month, which was to either make my Sailor Uranus site or a fic archive.
However!
Really enjoyed taking part in the challenge despite not finishing, though! I have very much missed the community aspect of making websites. I was very productive earlier in the year โ revamped my ONE OK ROCK site and put up my Final Fantasy series fansite which is more than I've gotten done in a long time, so I'm just glad to be making incremental progress again...

My main project was the fic archive which I made!! I couldn't get search working on it, that's still a mystery and I'm just giving up on it for now and hoping someone will make a tutorial some day. Other than that, I made a new theme for my site and updated some more liveblogs!
My next plan is to work on some shrines - I started on an SMT one but I really gotta think what I wanna say about it.

Thank you
enchantedsleeper,
kalloway, &
smallweb for running and hosting this event. I enjoyed it!
What did you work on during Small Web September?
I ended up doing a lot of different things, generally spruced up the place, but the big things are:
I reworked my Book Log and uploaded all of my logs from when I started writing them in 2018!
And I added a Dragon Age Shrine! The splash page isn't very mobile friendly, but the rest of the pages are. I tried my best to get the navigation page to look right on different resolutions, but there may still be some jankyness. The Kirkwall map also changes between night and day based on your browser settings! Something I most likely wouldn't have done without the great resources shared during SWS.
What's next for your small web plans? Where will you go from here?
I'm planning to make a /now page. Other than that I think I will just be working on adding more writing overall and other pages to the shrine.

The Dragon Age shrine is really damn cool as well! You did some really good stuff this month!

What did you work on during Small Web September?
Finishing up my neocities summer revamp overhaul where I put a bunch of stuff into different folders so I could have everything be more manageable. Secondary goal was building up a fic archive with my old stuff, but it turned into much more of a flash drive hunting. I need to sort all of that outโฆ
What's next for your small web plans? Where will you go from here?
Iโm planning on making October and November the time period where I start trying to get all of my years of ideas together in a coherent and readable sort of way rather than just being like bullet point lists or paragraphs or snippets of dialogue. Probably one shots rather than chapter fics because Iโve never been good with long commitments. Thatโll be my winter update!
This was fun to participate in, thanks for hosting.
no subject
I know, right? I can't believe it's October tomorrow...
Good luck with your idea sorting, that sounds like a fun project! I've been doing that a little bit myself by putting fic snippets up on my archive - it's nice to give them a life beyond just idling in a Notes app on my phone or a folder on my computer. But turning them into something a bit more fleshed-out is even better!
Thank you for taking part - I'm glad you had fun! ^-^

Since the last check-in, I've finally done the main goal that I wanted to do: that is, make a stylesheet for my individual fic pages and figure out how to apply it! I've since applied it to all the FFXII fics on my site, and I have 3 more fandoms currently uploaded left to do (FFXIV, Resident Evil and inFamous, all my largest written-for fandoms ahahah). In the process of doing the stylesheet, I also realised that I much prefer the details box styling for the individual fics, so I'm planning on updating the main fic splash page to match it, but still with my original idea of having each bar be a gradient of greens from my site colour scheme. :D
Stylesheet spoiler alert: if your sheet is in a different folder to the page you're applying it to, you can't just use the #stylesheet for the link - it has to be the full external site link cos neocities counts it as an external link!! Who fucking knew!! Lots of googling and troubleshooting learned me this good lolol.
Here's the styling on one of the fics - I also decided how I want to deal with fics which have accompanying art; that is to say, I'm adding art to the bottom!
I've also made a splash page for my OCs which I'm really happy with, and made a start on my XIV WoL Neroe's page using the same layout as I picked for the shrines. As you can see I still need to fill in info for Neroe and also for the other 3 OCs I used for the splash page, but it's proof of concept!
What did you work on during Small Web September?
I worked on a lot of different things! Changed up my navbar; finally figured out stylesheets and how to apply them; applied it to all my FFXII fics; made an OC splash page and a page for Neroe; did a LOT of work on my Sart shrine including fully changing the layout, adding a music player with his battle theme, and adding in all his voicelines, skirmish information and a lot of other info; moved my changelog and credits to separate pages; added a chatbox for the main home page! I feel like I did more shit, but this is all I can remember rn.
What's next for your small web plans? Where will you go from here?
- I wanna finish applying stylesheet to all of my fics, then upload the remainder of them to the site with the correct style
- Redo the fic splash page to match the individual fic pages, specifically the details boxes
- Finish my Sart shrine insofar as I can do - this includes adding the new French translation of his Field Note that my friend did for me, adding my sort of WIP ship manifesto, fic lists, artists, affiliates (hopefully!!), and merch, memes and gpose shit
- Finish adding info to Neroe's page, then do the pages for the other OCs so far
- Something totally new: I decided last night that I really want to make a gigs log for all the gigs I've been to! My idea for this is almost like a forum post feed style, with pictures of my ticket stubs which I keep for all gigs where they're a thing, any photos I've taken from the gigs, and my thoughts if I can remember any! I'll prolly focus on my fave bands I've seen a lot of times first for this, but I'm excited! This was entirely brought on by seeing some really fucking cute Starset blinkies and wanting to put them on my site, and then it spiralled from there :DDD
- Oh and finally, I want to do a pair of RPF ship shrines - one for David Mitchell/Charlie Brooker and one for Eric Bogosian/Assad Zaman, along with timelines, propaganda and tinhatting, fic recs and whatnot. It'll be really fun to do this for Brooker/Mitchell imo since it's a ship which has pretty much died out at this point, and it'll be a fun way to indulge my nostalgia heh.
All in all, I've had an absolute blast!! It was really nice to have an excuse to work on my site, and the check in posts and encouragement were really useful! I also really loved getting to see everyone else's sites too, it gave me so much inspiration!! Thank you so much for hosting this,

I ask myself that alllll the time, seriously. How is it October tomorrow??
It sounds like you got loads done for the challenge - that's awesome! I would like to add a music player to my site at some point, too, in a homage to the MIDI anime themes I loved in the 00s ๐
All of your future small web plans are really exciting! The gigs log is a super cool idea and that sounds really fun ^^ As someone who likes to hang onto things, I should also think about giving them a home on the small web ๐ค (I've considered making a little old tech shrine for mine and my partner's old devices, but haven't put thought into action yet xD) I'm also a big fan of indulging nostalgia and I hope you have fun with the RPF shrines ^^
That's so sweet and you're super welcome! ^-^ <3 I'm delighted that you had a lot of fun with the event - that's all I could want! :D Thank you for being a part of SWS!

I crossposted a lot of my fics over, even if my events page isn't fully complete just yet I'm glad I got to do all of 2023, my tokusatsu watchlist got an update, my now page got a much needed updated (it was several months out of date), my gotchard fanart gallery is now up to date, I updated the links out page, added to my stamps page, and crossposted a meta essay! (Gotchard spoilers for that essay.)
I'm really proud of what I was able to get done, which was so much more than I was initially expecting! Especially since the latter half of the month was kicking my butt a bit. So I'm quite happy. Thank you for running this event!

What did I work on during Small Web September?
I did not update Fujofans ๐.
I did do these things instead:
What's next for your small web plans? Where will you go from here?
I am dipping into Eleventy to finally learn how to use a SSG to make another web directory BEFORE I update fujofans. ๐ I managed to make my first site with a template, and used vercel to preview it. Still can't help but feel that I could have typed all this out in plain html/css in 10% of the time, but I know that it'll save time and agony later when I finally get tired of copy/pasting the nav menu.
I spent like 5 hours of my life trying to figure out how to link files from my own directory. Turns out I needed to change vercel settings cuz the default "public" folder is named "_site" or whatever instead of... well, public. Build & Development Settings -> output directory -> enter the name of the public folder holding all the stuff you want people to see. My brain is completely fried from doing one simple thing, and I'm sad and cranky.
This is the most frustrating thing about trying new things with 50000 pages of documentation from 10 different people using 10 different ways to deploy their site, they all use different folder/file names and paths so it turns out most of my problems are following one tutorial but that tutorial doesn't account for default pathing. But at least I figured this out after a very hard and long time.
I was vaguely following petrapixel's tutorial for setting up eleventy but honestly all the jargon is confusing to me and they're using neocities (which I don't use but most of the accessible tutorials are for neocities LMAO), so I just clicked "use this template" on a template I liked and edited it to my liking.
Next on the list is to style it the way I want. And then when that's done, I'll finally update fujofans LMAOOOO maybe I'll figure out some way to pull data/sites/etc from google sheets and automatically format it into something purdy. It's hard to learn things... I end up wanting to delve deeper into another thing that's part of that learning, and never finishing that first thing i wanted to do...
REGARDLESS, thank you everyone here! Thank admins for running the event, and thank you other community members for showing off your work! It's always easier to work on things when you're twinning.. or tripletting.. etc with others.

Oh yes, the side quests, I am so very familiar ๐ They usually lead to my browser tabs multiplying into the dozens... When I'm at my computer doing small web stuff, you'll hear me mutter "So... what was I doing?" approximately every 10 minutes xD
I totally agree! Thank you for being part of the event, and I'm really glad you enjoyed it and found it useful! <3

I played a bit on easy mode, finishing up a site I had built part of the UI for:
It's dessigned to be THE simplest online poll/survey app, and it's free to use:
https://kirk.is/polling/
I even made a youtube video to run through its use: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBJH-UT6ISw
so, famously programmers "scratch their own itch" with stuff they make, and it's already been good for a poll for my band.
At the risk of breaking its minimalism - the one other person who has an interest in it asked me to add "ranked choice voting" - it's a little rougher but it works - https://kirk.is/rcv-polling/
(so that's a little re-oderable widget and then it runs the math to make more fair elections: you can see the results of a BIG election test data at https://kirk.is/rcv-polling/view/?prez ) (results at bottom once it loads)

Also, getting things done on a project you've already started is still very much an achievement!

This was fun! I loved seeing what other people are working on - and also, how many people are working on something! I did a good bit of oldschool browsing, that was great.
I didn't really manage all my goals, but I did get something done and the check-in prompts reminded me that I should, which was very helpful. My list:
Add three things on my /nope page- Success! Here's the page, in case you're curious.Add three more fanfic recs- also done! Behold: the reclistThanks for running this event! I really enjoyed it.

What did you work on during Small Web September?: I made a section of my website dedicated to my Zelda AU, which outlines their general profiles and fun little tidbits about them!
What's next for your small web plans? Where will you go from here?: I want to make a little fanfiction archive for the AU as well, and seeing as the fanfiction I've written for it so far consists of multiple chapters per work, I want to figure out a simple way to integrate chapter buttons into the archive as well, and I need to figure out a layout for itโI want to integrate a button for readers to switch between a dark and light mode for accessibility purposes. I'm currently going back and forth between whether I want to do it with JavaScript or just plain HTML/CSS! ^^

What did you work on during Small Web September?
I worked on my personal writing archive, and its mirror on DW. I didn't get anywhere near as much done as I'd hoped, but I got some stuff done and also got to roll a lot of ideas around in my brain which was also good.
What's next for your small web plans? Where will you go from here?
This is like a years-long (especially at the rate I'm going) project so... archiving forever, lol. I did discover, the other day, that I didn't like one tiny formatting element so I've spent the night stripping that out. I still have a few pages to take care of, and some file renaming, but once that's done it's done!

September ended up being pretty hectic for me, so I didn't get to do much until recently. My goals were:
- Update the index with FF.Net links - I managed to finish up all of these! Although it made me realise just how many stories were never archived there.
- Add various ficlets I haven't done yet - This will have to be a project for later on.
What's next for your small web plans? Where will you go from here?
I'd like to finish up the goals I didn't reach in September. But it was still great to have a deadline to work towards, and a community surrounding it! I really enjoyed hearing about other people's experiences.

School and work got in the way more than I thought it would, but I did get the update done today! :D
For anyone curious, here's my site!
