Somehow it's September already and the kick-off point for Small Web September has arrived! \o/
As a reminder, this is the first of five ‘check-in’/comment points that will be published during the event – you can check out the schedule and dates of these posts over on the event intro. There’s no cut-off point for commenting on these, so you can add something at any time – you also don’t need to comment on them all or do them in order! The themes are a loose guide, but all discussion is welcome.
This first post will be for introducing yourself and your project(s) and talking about what you’re planning to do during the month. Of course, there’s no obligation to stick to what you’ve set down and no-one will be checking up xD But it can be a nice thought exercise! You’re free to make the goal(s) as broad or as specific as you like – it’s totally up to you.
There’s no set format for this check-in, but here’s one you can use if you’d like (just copy-paste and replace the placeholders with your own answers in the comments):
Also, if anyone would like to answer it, here’s a discussion starter: What interests you about the small/indie web, and how did you learn about or get into it?

<strong>Project(s):</strong> (Share a link to your project(s) if you’d like to, and/or describe what you’re making or would like to make!)
<strong>What are you hoping to work on for SWS?</strong> (This can be as general as “add to my site”, or as specific as “archive X fanworks” or “implement a responsive layout”. You could even include ‘bonus goals’ – more ambitious things you’d like to get to if you have time!)Also, if anyone would like to answer it, here’s a discussion starter: What interests you about the small/indie web, and how did you learn about or get into it?

Date: 2024-09-03 03:00 am (UTC)Omg, that's so great to hear! I'm delighted that you were inspired ^^ I often get that same "new event enthusiasm" and want to make something right away when I join an event, so for exchanges and anything with a sign-up period it can annoying to wait until the event properly kicks off xD
I support having simple and flexible goals, too! Good luck with your shrine work! <3

Date: 2024-09-03 03:10 am (UTC)I love that members of the community are helping each other out with site-building and resources - that's really cool ^^ Sounds like a great scene to be part of.

Date: 2024-09-03 03:24 am (UTC)I feel you on that one! I want to preserve the novelty of doing small web stuff as much as I possibly can. And I want to avoid taking it too seriously. This conflicts a bit with my desire to have a "polished"-looking site (or even just a site that looks like I know what tf I'm doing); even as I'm trying to let my site be silly and imperfect, I want it to look "cool" xD It's a battle.
Oh my god, yes. I love that about small web site-building, too. Originally when I set out to make a personal fanworks archive, I thought that I would host it on WordPress so that I could archive without worrying about the look or code. I installed WP and looked at the dozens of files on my web host and thought, "...I have no idea what any of these are for." And the idea of not understanding my own site made me sad. So, I deleted it all and made a static HTML site instead \o/
Oh, that sounds very fun! And from 2014, too! Is tilde.club still going today?

Date: 2024-09-03 03:30 am (UTC)That's extremely smart (and AO3 has been having some more problems with slowness and errors lately...) At some point early this year, I think it was, AO3 was down for a bit (can't remember if it was planned or unplanned) and I took great pleasure in reading a fic on a friend's personal archive and leaving a comment there xD
Seconding (or thirding?) the comments about how awesome your friendship bracelets archive is! It's amazing that you've made so many over the years! I've never made anything more complex than a three-strand plaited one but I would love to try some of those designs.

Date: 2024-09-03 03:38 am (UTC)I support archiving even "bad" fanworks! I'm doing the same by going right back to my first published fics and archiving everything; for a long time, I felt like they were too embarrassing to surface from the depths of my FF.net account, but like you, I want to build a complete picture of my fandom-ing, even the cringe early stuff. Wishing you luck with the fiddly image part of things!
I've done something similar in giving unpublished WIPs a section on my fic page; originally I had a "misc" page that contained bits of fic and bits of meta, but then I wound up fleshing out the meta side more and dedicating the page to those, and it makes more sense to sit fic scraps with my fic anyway. I support archiving bits of commentfic if you want to ^^

Date: 2024-09-03 05:23 am (UTC)Project(s): Moth Wings and Starlight, a Baldur's Gate 3 fancomic hosted on Neocities. Eventually it's going to be a long-form comic following my Tav, Aelar, after the events of the game but right now I'm still putting out the "Preludes" season, which is a series of one-shots that take place during BG3 itself.
What are you hoping to work on for SWS?
- small tweaks and reupload two of the pages in prelude 1
- update Characters page to have a small bio of Aelar
- complete sketching the next comic
I'm pretty busy right now, so it's not much but I'm hoping it's manageable.

Date: 2024-09-03 05:30 am (UTC)- officially launch by the end of the month
- add more personal pages: link hub/where to find me, and portfolio pages (maybe one for general, and one for BG3 fanart)

Date: 2024-09-03 06:18 am (UTC)Highly relatable! A few years ago, I concluded that it wasn't my place to judge which of my fics were worth sharing, so I dug up all my old and embarrassing work (well, everything that was finished and at least a thousand words long) and posted it on a backup AO3 account. I suppose, if even one person reads and enjoys them, it's worth a little embarrassment. Good luck with your archiving!
Your unfinished WIP section is reassuring; thank you for linking to it! I was thinking 'would it be silly or pointless to archive these little scraps, many of which are just silly things I wrote as a kid?', but seeing your site helped me realise that, if anyone else did the same thing, I'd just think it was a cool little thing to include.

Date: 2024-09-03 09:25 am (UTC)Thank you so much for the love for my bracelets page ♥ (Amusingly this is not even the beginning of my braceleting adventures, but I have no pics of the previous decade lol, the archive starts when I joined a forum on the topic and began sharing my projects with other members!) One of the things I wanted for my craft archive was for it to be a central place to find back the patterns I used for all my projects, so if you ever decide to experiment more with friendship bracelets you can see the patterns I used =)

Date: 2024-09-03 10:56 am (UTC)It's the best way to do it! And learning as you go can be really fun. I feel the same way about the small web community I've found so far 😍 Definitely zero regrets about jumping in here!

Date: 2024-09-03 11:00 am (UTC)I've seen a number of people cite that as a motivator in their responses here, and I totally get it. More power to you in making a space that isn't subject to tech giant whims! Also, I really like the buttons and icons on your site and am very tempted to purloin a few XD

Date: 2024-09-03 11:18 am (UTC)A woodcut/halftone image processor sounds really awesome! Best of luck with that project! I also appreciate the link to the permacomputing page, as this is a new term for me and I find it very interesting 👀

Date: 2024-09-03 11:30 am (UTC)Project(s): https://porcelain.neocities.org/; Porcelain, my web home for my creative writing, my doll profiles and pictures, and my makeup pages.
What are you hoping to work on for SWS? I'm committing to working on my site every morning before work on workdays. I hope to use that time to develop a real homepage and transfer material from my Wordpress blogs to my Neocities site, but more than anything, I want to give my site time and attention every morning.
What interests you about the small/indie web, and how did you learn about or get into it? I have always had ties to the small web through my Geocities site, Livejournal, Deadjournal, Dreamwidth, and now Neocities. I'm drawn to the creative control you have over your work in these spaces. Right now, HTML interests me most, because I think it's important to be able to "own" every aspect of your webpage and be able to move it wherever you want, whenever you want. Back in the "old days," that kind of creative control was completely taken for granted. Even MySpace gave users a lot of creative freedom over their pages.
