[personal profile] kalloway posting in [community profile] smallweb
Heya, [community profile] smallweb, how's it going?

First, I'd like to thank [personal profile] enchantedsleeper for running Small Web September. \o/ Thank you!

Second, I want to apologize for my absence over the last couple of months. Lots of real life happening. ^^;;

Third, I want to update our Cool Links in our sticky post so please, please give me some resources! If I get a lot, I might be a bit slow to update because of lots of real life still going on.

And Fourth, this post is yours! What's going well, going not so well, going in general, etc.

A Cool Link

When a friend is interested in learning HTML, I often recommend that, for their first steps, they read Web Zine 01 by Zach Mandeville. It only covers the very basics, but it does so in a way that is 0% intimidating, while still bringing up things like semantics, accessibility, and standards compliance. Even though there's only one issue, I think it's good for people to have that foundation of "I'm just trying to help the computer understand what I'm trying to say, and the computer's trying its best to understand."

I was a little sorry that I ended up doing no website work at all during Small Web September, but then I ended up making an entire new website in October, so apparently the website inspiration was just lurking around the corner and waiting to ambush me! I now have a Danganronpa fansite. It was fun to make, and I'm looking forward to updating it here and there, especially when Danganronpa 2x2 releases next year!

(As a heads-up for anyone who's unfamiliar with Danganronpa, the website does include some screenshots of murder scenes from the games, although they're not realistic; they're in an anime style and the blood is hot pink.)

I'm trying to get into using semantic HTML more. It's a lot of stuff to change over at the beginning.

Solaria has a CSS tidbits page. Coyote has a page with a bunch of resources (the link takes you to the coding section). W3Schools has a lot of stuff for HTML and CSS. Lettuce also has a page with a bunch of resources.

On the accessibility side, I find WebAIM's contrast checker very useful to compare your pick of colors to the official standards. They also have a link contrast checker, though if you have another visual indication that something is a link than just its color, the standards don't require as much contrast.

And also accessibility, a quick tutorial by Kalechips to give a light mode and a dark mode to your website with only CSS. (You need to know how to use CSS variables for that, but there's a link in the tutorial to explain how it works.)

(And this is when I realize that I don't have a lot of Cool Resources to link because I tend to learn how to do one thing by looking at 5+ different pages because none is the Perfectly Complete explanation I would bookmark and share x') )

I already replied in the cool links sticky, but I'm going to buckle in and learn to deploy to Neocities via Github using this guide. (Page SFW, site NSFW)

I still need to actually launch these pages and get them live, but I have been coding more fic crossposts for my website lately. For a cool link, I might have shared this before but it is always worth linking to this page of Fannish Website-Making Resources!
