Got notice from the friend who'd hosted my old site for more than two decades that it would be going offline shortly. What a mix of emotions! I should have backups of everything, so it's not a big deal in that regard, and I haven't had edit-access in almost a decade, but just... wow. It's a little weird to think of it not being there.
Yeah, I wouldn't have minded a smidge more warning so I could make some newer backups, but it is what it is. o7 my old website, gone to the wayback machine in the sky. Friend hosted it for far longer than they ever needed to.
Sounds like you've already done it, but info for anyone else that needs it:
you can preserve sites on the wayback machine. There's a "save page" section on the front page, you can enter a url and it will save a copy. You need to do it for every page of your site though. And you can repeat it every time you change your site so it can act as a history of your site.
I wish! I've just been dragging the same files around for nearly three decades. (But there does seem to be an incomplete backup on the Wayback Machine, which is enough. Mostly what I need is story titles so I can match them with files, and the listings I need are there.)
Another tip, when saving webpages with it, I recomment having an Internet Archive account! With it, on the Save page you can check "Save outlinks", which as the name suggests, also saves any page that is linkedino the one you're archiving.
So for example, if you archive an index, it will save the pages linked in sidebar too. Or for a blog, when archiving page 4 it will save pages 3 and 5 as well. I like to archive old fan websites and it has been a time and lifesaver.
Yep. And gah, there was a ton of FFX stuff on there, wasn't there? (Now I'm trying to think of who else I still know who had subdomains or other projects on there. It was not a huge number of us, but enough. But who is still around... But there were a lot of different projects hosted on there over the years...)
